5K Run/Walk
After two years of interrupted plans due to COVID, the 6th annual in-person West 5K SCADaddle for Research timed run/walk took place on April 23 at Crown Point Park on Mission Bay, San Diego, CA! Over 200 participants registered including 35 survivors and 16 family/friends who walked in memory of their SCAD Angel who did not survive her SCAD heart attack. A huge thank you to SCAD survivor, Ellen Robin who chaired the West Coast 5K weekend and to everyone who helped her to create such a memorable event!
Awards were given to the overall male and female winners and recognitions were given to the overall 2nd and 3rd place male and female finishers. Trophies were presented to the top three male and female winners in a variety of age categories. All participants received a participation medal and participants who registered before the deadline received a 5K t-shirt. Over $10,000 was raised to help advance research!
After the award ceremony, participants enjoyed a complimentary gourmet pizza lunch made on the premises, a silk aerial demonstration while shopping the SCAD store and various vendor booths.
Survivors Donna Sugimoto and Ellen Robin created an online silent auction raising over an additional $3800! This was the first time an online auction was organized to raise funds for research.
SCAD Social Reunion
One of the many highlights of the weekend was the SCAD Social Reunion on Friday evening for SCAD survivors, their supporters and families/friends who lost a loved one to SCAD. The dinner took place at the United Portuguese Hall in San Diego. A box dinner with a variety of entrees and complimentary wine was served.
Dr Sharonne Hayes, an internationally recognized SCAD expert from Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program, attended the weekend and presented the latest SCAD research findings after dinner. Dr Hayes presentation was also streamed on Facebook. Dr. Hayes spent time after her presentation answering questions from the audience as well as those submitted online from the virtual audience.
