Not that long ago, SCAD was considered rare and found mainly in autopsies. Thanks to research and greater awareness, SCAD is now the most common cause of myocardial infarction (MI) in women younger than 50, accounting for as much as 35% of MIs in this group, and among women who are pregnant or have recently given birth. Fortunately, most people survive and go on to lead a productive life. Although less common, SCAD does occur in men.
