Three Heart Attacks – SCAD

December 3, 2015

I suffered my first heart attack at the age of 39. I was a physically fit, exercised regularly, ate healthy, and was considered in excellent health. On my first trip to the ER, I was diagnosed with reflux and sent home with reflux medicines. Two days later, while sitting at the dining room table, I felt a severe pain in my chest, my left arm felt like it was being cut off, and I had a stabbing pain in my back. After a cath, it was determined I suffered a heart attack. MY LAD was blocked. Fast forward five years. The horrible pain returned while at work five years later. I was taken by ambulance to the ER and again was told I suffered another heart attack. The doctor did some research and suggested I go to another hospital in the area and see a specialist. I was sent home with additional medicine, another rehabilitation schedule, and fear!! Approximately 3 weeks later, the intense pain returned again. Another ambulance ride, seven days in intensive care, and the team of doctors diagnosed SCAD. This was the most terrifying time in my life. After about 10 days in the hospital, I was released with new medicines, new instructions on living, and an order to go to the MAYO Clinic to learn more about my condition.

My life is somewhat back to normal now, almost 6 years since my trip to MAYO. I am blessed to be alive!
