2018 West Coast 5k SCADaddle for Research
Saturday, September 8, 2018
The fourth annual SCADdaddle© weekend September 7- 8 in Carlsbad, CA was another amazing weekend. The weekend kicked off on Friday evening with a Survivor Meet & Greet, which provided an opportunity for survivors to meet others in person who also live with SCAD.
5K SCADaddle© for Research
The 5K fun run/walk took place Saturday morning in Carlsbad, CA starting at Aqua Hedionda Lagoon and ending at the Discovery Center. There were over 200 participants including 33 survivors and two families who participated in memory of their loved ones who did not survive. . In addition to California, participants came from AZ, IL, MI, NM, OR, UT and as far away as Sweden. Thousands of dollars were raised for research.
We were honored to have Barbara-Lee Edwards, evening news anchor from Channel 8 (CBS), emcee our event. The day began with a warm-up by Jazzercise Oceanside Fitness Center and Jolene Holmstrand sharing her amazing survivor story. There was also a moment of silence for those who did not survive as their names were read. SCAD survivors gathered and were recognized by all attendees.
As participants approached the finish line they were cheered on by FCA Cheerleaders from Carlsbad and they received a SCADaddle participation medal from the Carlsbad Princesses as they crossed the finish line. A wonderful silent auction, vendor booths, a delicious complimentary lunch by Ceja’s Mexican Diner & Grill and music by Bach to Rock Music School added to the festivities.
SCAD Insights Presentation
At 1 pm Dr. Sharonne Hayes from Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program (Rochester, MN) and Dr. Jeffrey Cavendish from Kaiser Permanente – San Diego shared their insights about SCAD. Their presentation was streamed live on SCAD Research, Inc. Facebook page and watched by individuals around the world. Click SCAD Insights to watch their presentation on Facebook.
SCAD Reunion Dinner
A SCAD Reunion dinner took place Saturday evening. Survivors not only had an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, they were also challenged to share with the group what SCAD taught them about themselves.
