The COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges in 2020. In January, we began promoting six in-person 5K SCADaddles. By late March as the pandemic grew, it became apparent that the spring/summer SCADaddles would need to be rescheduled until Fall. By late summer we realized that all in-person SCADaddles would need to be postponed until 2021.

Determined to organize a SCADaddle virtually to replicate our in-person SCADaddles, a team of volunteers went to work to plan and implement our first Virtual SCADaddle & Mayo SCAD@Home on October 16-17, 2020.

SCAD Reunions – Virtual Style

Since an important part of SCADaddle weekends is meeting other survivors, their supporters and families of SCAD Angels, two socials were planned on Zoom:

  • Friday Reunion was hosted by SCADaddle 5K chairs – after gathering as a whole, participants broke into groups by region. They had the option to visit other geographic “locations” via Zoom rooms. There was plenty of opportunity to meet new survivors and SCAD Angel families while also catching up with old friends.
  • Saturday Nightcap included a demonstration on how to make our Signature SCAD Cocktail by survivor Jim Farrell. Afterwards, participants broke into smaller groups including a group for SCAD Angels families.

Thank you to survivor Amanda Frisbee who coordinated and hosted our Virtual Social Events.

SCADaddle – Virtual Style

Our Virtual SCADaddle took place on Saturday morning. Twelve SCAD survivors shared their stories on Facebook Live for SCADaddle participants to listen to as they ran, walked, biked, skipped, jumped or relaxed at home.

A special thank you to the survivors who shared their stories and to Nick D’Orazio for his interviewing and Facebook Streaming skills.

Mayo Clinic SCAD Presentation

Also on Saturday, we were honored to have Drs. Hayes, Gulati, Tweet and Best share on Facebook Live their latest research.

Dr. Hayes began by recognizing SCAD Research, Inc’s milestone of donating a total of $1 million to their groundbreaking research program since we started in 2011! We are now a Principal Benefactor for our lifetime giving of one million dollars! Thank you to everyone who have donated and raised funds for research.

Click here to watch their presentation and answers to the questions submitted through our Facebook page. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how the funds we donate to Mayo Clinic are used.

Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program started in 2010 and was the first research focused on SCAD. They share their findings throughout the medical community through numerous publications and also present at medical conferences.

Thank You
